Malam Jabba

Origins and Development

In 1962, inspired by the region’s potential, the Austrian Ambassador to Pakistan proposed establishing a ski resort in Malam Jabba. The last Wali (king) of Swat, Miangul Jahanzeb, allocated 275 acres of land for the project—selling 5 acres to the government for Rs. 8,000 and gifting the remaining 270 acres to Pakistan’s tourism department. The Austrian government supported the initiative by providing ski equipment and funding for the chairlift, while the Pakistani government constructed the resort infrastructure, including hotels. By the late 1980s, the resort was operational, featuring an 800-meter ski slope and modern amenities.

Destruction During the Taliban Era

In 2007, the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) seized control of Swat Valley, leading to significant turmoil. Malam Jabba’s ski resort was repurposed as a militant stronghold. During this period, the resort’s hotel was destroyed by fire, and the Austrian-built chairlift was dismantled. The Taliban’s actions halted tourism and skiing activities in the region.

Revival and Reconstruction

Following the restoration of government control, efforts to revive Malam Jabba’s tourism industry commenced. In September 2014, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government awarded the reconstruction project to the Samsons Group of Companies. The initiative included rebuilding the chairlift, constructing new hotels, and restoring ski slopes. The new chairlift, featuring 103 cable cars, was inaugurated on September 1, 2016. A 76-room five-star hotel, operated by Pearl Continental Hotels & Resorts, opened in 2020.
